Beausejour, Grenada, March 3 – Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has declared his intention to cement the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the dominant political force in Grenada, urging unity among party supporters as they set their sights on re-election.

Speaking before a massive crowd at the NDC’s convention on Sunday at the Beausejour playing field in St. George’s North West—an opposition stronghold held by former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell—the Grenadian leader reminded supporters of the party’s past struggles and emphasized the need to maintain momentum.

“I want us to remember that in 1999, 2013, and 2018, we did not win a single seat,” Mitchell said.

“God has led us to the promised land, but we have to build the promised land. We have to grow the promised land.”

The NDC’s convention, held under the theme of party unity and strength, marked a show of force for the ruling party as it prepares for future elections.

The party won the 2022 general elections with a narrow 9-6 seat mandate, breaking years of dominance by the New National Party (NNP), which had previously swept consecutive elections under Dr. Keith Mitchell.

The Prime Minister made it clear that his administration is focused on not only governing but solidifying NDC as the “only choice, the first choice, the best choice” for Grenadians.

“The goal of the National Democratic Congress, as approved by the new constitution today, is to make the National Democratic Congress the premier political party in Grenada,” Mitchell proclaimed.

The turnout at the convention appears to reflect growing confidence within the party, especially in the wake of internal turmoil within the opposition NNP, which has been rocked by a wave of resignations.

Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, and St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, also addressed the convention rally.

Another highlight of the event was the election of Andy Williams as the party’s new General Secretary and Gloria Thomas as Chairperson.

Mitchell warned against complacency, urging party members to stay united.
