PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, January 28-A Caribbean Airlines ATR 72-600 experienced engine failure Monday night as it approached Trinidad’s Piarco International Airport, marking the second serious incident in a week.

Flight BW1541, carrying 68 passengers and four crew members, was nearing landing over the Caroni Bird Sanctuary when its #1 engine failed, prompting the pilot to issue a distress call: “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.”

The cabin crew quickly instructed passengers to brace for impact as the aircraft made an emergency landing at 10:05 p.m.

Despite the alarming situation, the plane touched down safely, and no injuries were reported.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Caribbean Airlines confirmed the emergency and said all operational procedures were followed.

The aircraft, registered as 9Y-TTC, has been removed from service for inspection.
This engine failure follows another troubling event just a week earlier, when another ATR 72-600, 9Y-TTA, lost its nose wheel mid-flight between Barbados and Tobago.

Fortunately, that flight also ended without injuries, and the missing wheel was later recovered.
Engine failures in turboprop aircraft like the ATR 72-600 are rare but can occur due to mechanical issues or external factors.

Pilots are extensively trained to handle such emergencies, relying on memory-based procedures to stabilize the aircraft during critical moments like landing.
