The Grenadian government is taking significant steps towards decriminalizing marijuana, with the Cannabis Working Committee announcing that draft legislation will be presented to Parliament by April 2025.

Anslem Clouden, Chairman of the Cannabis Working Committee, has called on traditional farmers and agricultural enthusiasts to prepare by forming cooperatives and requesting land allocations from the government. “I would respectfully suggest that the first thing we ought to consider is an application for growers’ cooperatives,” Clouden stated. “This will help comply with United Nations statutes concerning narcotics prohibition.”

The committee recommends that cooperatives, comprising up to 20 members, begin applying for five-acre plots of government land. This proactive approach will ensure farmers are ready to capitalize on opportunities once the legislation is passed.

The decriminalization of marijuana is expected to open doors to increased employment opportunities, especially for Grenada’s youth, and stimulate economic growth in the agricultural sector.
