St. George’s, Grenada — As the New National Party (NNP) approaches a decisive leadership convention on December 15, leadership contender Peter David delivered a passionate address Monday night urging unity, transparency, and democratic principles to guide the party’s future.

David, a veteran of the NNP and a key figure in its successful mobilization and fundraising efforts, emphasized his vision for a party that transcends internal divisions and appeals broadly to Grenadians.

He described the convention as a critical juncture for the NNP to consolidate its base, reinvent itself, and prepare for the next general elections.

“The NNP must return to being the vanguard, not just for our loyal base, but for the entire nation,” David stated. “Every day must be seen as a new opportunity to hammer our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks—any good act for the advancement of our nation.”

David highlighted his long-standing contributions to the NNP, including leading strategic teams and spearheading international outreach and fundraising efforts that helped secure multiple general election victories.

He positioned himself as the candidate best equipped to lead the party into a new era, citing his cross-party appeal and ability to unite diverse factions.

“I offered myself because I believe I can unite the party, raise the funding to support its operations and prepare it for the next general election,” David said.

“I am best placed to build a broad national coalition and inspire a wider nation.”

David’s address underscored the importance of unity as the foundation for the NNP’s success and warned against the dangers of internal discord.

He urged party members to reject tribalism and personal attacks, stressing that robust democratic processes could strengthen the party rather than divide it.

“Through trying times, we need to invest in respect for democratic norms,” David declared. “We should not fan the flames of tribalism. Let’s not yield to the temptation to devour each other.”

David also appealed for a fair and transparent leadership election, referencing his adherence to party rules despite obstacles.

He disclosed that he had written to the NNP twice to express his interest in contesting the leadership after Dr. Keith Mitchell announced his intention to step down.

“Everyone interested and nominated by long-established constitutional methods deserves a chance to contest for the position in a process that is transparent and constitutionally sound,” David argued. “That’s the only way the best choice will emerge.”

David’s remarks came amid growing tensions within the NNP, with outgoing leader Dr. Keith Mitchell openly endorsing Emmalin Pierre as his preferred successor.

Mitchell has criticized what he described as “characters plotting” to take over the party, remarks widely seen as directed at David.

Despite the friction, David reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s principles and respect for democratic processes.

He urged members to rise above personal grievances for the more significant cause of the NNP and the Grenadian people.

“When the writers of history ask me what I did with my time in politics, I hope I can say I fought—sometimes on uneven fields—to unite a nation,” David said.

The upcoming convention will determine the NNP’s future leadership and direction as a political force in Grenada.

With the stakes high, David’s vision for unity and inclusiveness starkly contrasts the deepening divisions within the party.

“We must go forward with love, respect, and an unwavering commitment to democracy,” David concluded. “Heads, hearts, and hands in unity—to reach our destiny.”
