ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – Just days before the New National Party (NNP) convention on December 15, Political Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell has confirmed that two contenders have formally submitted their bids to succeed him, setting the stage for a contentious leadership showdown.

Speaking as a guest on Talking Point Friday, a social media program hosted by Sheldon Scott that often amplifies NNP perspectives, Dr. Mitchell refrained from naming the candidates but provided details on the process.

“The party has already decided that if I’m giving up the leadership, there will be a process. A committee has been established to invite recommendations for possible alternatives going forward, and they have reported that they have received two applications,” Dr. Mitchell stated.

The outgoing leader elaborated on the next steps, emphasizing that the screening committee would “interview the personnel” and “make recommendations to the executive” on how the party should proceed.

However, party insiders and political observers widely speculate that the two candidates are Emmalin Pierre, a Mitchell ally favored by the outgoing leader, and Peter David, a figure with significant cross-party and national appeal.

Dr. Mitchell’s establishment of the screening committee has come under heavy criticism, with accusations that it was designed to thwart Peter David’s candidacy.

David, a former Foreign Affairs Minister, is seen by many as a unifying figure within the party and a leader capable of broadening its base.

However, Mitchell has strongly opposed David’s leadership bid, exacerbating tensions within the NNP’s ranks.

Party insiders claim Mitchell’s preference for Pierre underscores his desire to maintain influence within the NNP even after stepping down.

The screening committee’s composition and perceived bias have fueled allegations of internal manipulation.

However, his role in shaping the current leadership contest has drawn criticism even from within his party.
