ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, October 11th — Former St. George North East MP Tobias Clement has returned to the New National Party (NNP) after seven years away, pledging to help the opposition party regain government in the November 5 general election.

Speaking at the NNP’s “Better Grenada” rally at the National Stadium Sunday night, Clement said political leader Emmalin Pierre contacted him and that concerns about the country’s direction convinced him to return.

“When Sister Pierre gave me the call, I said, ‘Sister Pierre, the time has come,’” he told supporters.

His appearance renewed the significance of an appeal made by former NNP leader and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell during the 2022 election campaign.

“Toby, come back home. We want you home, Toby,” Mitchell said at that time.

Clement recalled that appeal but said he had wanted changes within the party before returning.

“I said, ‘Doctor Mitchell, clean house first.’ The house is clean, so Toby is back in the house of the New National Party,” he declared.

Clement won St. George’s North East on NNP tickets in 2013 and 2018 and served as a government backbencher without a ministerial portfolio.

He resigned from the party in December 2019 and crossed the parliamentary floor on April 14, 2020, following internal disagreements.

“I cannot sit back and sit out the next general election,” Clement said.

He urged supporters to mobilize relatives and turn out early on polling day as the NNP seeks to return to office.

“We’re going out early. We’re going out strong. We’re going out in our numbers,” he said.
