St. George’s, Grenada, February 4 – Alister Bain, a longtime pillar of the New National Party (NNP) and chairman of the St. George North West constituency branch, has resigned from both his position and the party, citing concerns over internal democracy and ethical leadership.

A key supporter of former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, Bain announced his resignation in a letter to NNP General Secretary Roland Bhola, effective immediately.

His departure marks a significant loss for the opposition party, particularly in North West St. George—a constituency Mitchell has represented for four decades.

“This decision has not been made lightly,” Bain stated in his resignation letter. “I find it necessary to step away from an organization that no longer aligns with the principles of democracy, fairness, and integrity that I hold dear.”

Bain accused the party leadership, including Mitchell, of divisive rhetoric and violating internal rules during the NNP’s 2024 convention and leadership elections.

He criticized “blatant violations” of party procedures and a failure to address “burning national issues.”

The resignation follows the controversial December leadership race, which saw Emmalin Pierre take the helm under contentious circumstances.

Bain’s decision to exit follows former General Secretary Peter David, who recently launched a nationwide political consultation tour.

Significantly, Bain attended David’s first town hall meeting last Thursday, fueling speculation that he may support the former NNP figure.

North West St. George has long been an NNP stronghold, and Bain’s departure could weaken the party’s grip on the constituency.

Bain’s resignation adds to the mounting uncertainty facing the NNP, as internal fractures threaten its once-dominant position in Grenadian politics.
